Women's economic empowerment means ensuring that women participate on equal terms in and benefit from decent work and social protection; have access to labor markets and control over resources, their own time, life and bodies; and have greater representation, agency and real participation in economic decision-making at all levels, from households to international institutions.
All this affects their food insecurity, which is greater than that of men: the gender gap in relation to food insecurity has increased from 1.7% in 2019 to more than 4% in 2021, with 31.9% of women in a situation of moderate or severe food insecurity compared to 27.6% of men.
