Bolivian Women Councilors Visit Three Municipalities Led by Women Mayors in Mallorca

As part of the Les Elegides program, Bolivian councilors Leidy Gumán (Minero municipality) and Yusmara Melena (Cobija municipality), currently on an institutional visit to Mallorca, carried out an intense day of work today visiting the municipalities of Llucmajor, Lloseta, and Algaida — three towns led by women mayors who have promoted bold and innovative policies on gender equality and community care.

The first stop took place in Llucmajor, where the delegation was welcomed by Mayor Francisca Lascolas, the first woman to hold this office in the municipality's democratic history**, along with the councilors for Urban Planning, Social Services, and Equality. During the meeting, participants highlighted the significance of female leadership in traditionally male-dominated areas such as urban planning and shared municipal actions focused on social services and promoting equality.

They then visited Lloseta, where they met with outgoing mayor Angelina Pérez, also the first woman mayor in the town's history, accompanied by the Councilor for Social Services and Equality and the municipal equality officer, who is responsible for the equality roundtables and for developing the municipality’s future Gender Equality Plan. It was emphasized that this legislature marks the first time Lloseta has had a specific council position dedicated to equality.

The final visit was to Algaida, where they met with all the members of the "Equality Roundtable", headed by Mayor Maria Antònia Mulet. This gathering showcased how the municipality coordinates its various departments through this cross-cutting and participatory structure that integrates gender and care perspectives throughout local governance.

This day of visits offered a direct exchange of experiences between elected women from different parts of the world, featuring inspiring, hands-on examples of how local politics can serve as a driver for social change. Accompanied by the technical team of the Fons Mallorquí de Cooperació, the Bolivian councilors gained first-hand insights into concrete projects and regional initiatives that are helping to build more inclusive, gender-equal local institutions.
